Benefits of Mental Health Counseling & Therapy
About Sommer
I’m Sommer Bergdale, Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, and co-owner of Serenity Counseling and Support Services. I first started working in the mental health field over 20 years ago while I was an undergraduate in college. I began my mental health career at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics working in the child psychiatric inpatient unit. While working at the hospital, I grew to love the field of mental health and decided to pursue my masters degree in Counselor Education at the University of Iowa.
After graduation, I moved to the Las Vegas area where I continued working in in-patient hospitals with children and adolescents.
In 2010, I saw a lack of mental health services the Las Vegas area was fueling in-patient psychiatric admissions, and founded Serenity Counseling and Support Services with therapy clinics located in Henderson and Las Vegas that help increase access to mental health care options throughout the Las Vegas valley.
Currently, I focus on working with adolescents, adults, and couples. I take a person-centered approach to therapy and believe that the therapeutic relationship is a key component in effective therapy. I enjoy helping people navigate difficult transition-periods in their life which often manifest in symptoms of depression and anxiety. I believe symptoms of mental illness often develop as a result of challenges in life and, when viewed through a development lens, make sense for what the person is experiencing.
Professionally, I have continued to develop my clinical skills over the years. I am trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and am working towards certification in EFT. I also have additional training in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I am fully licensed in the State of Nevada as a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (CP#1266) and I act as a site supervisor for students pursuing their master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling.
