Samuel J. Hickson, Ph.D. – Clinical Social Work Intern

Samuel J HicksonSamuel J. Hickson, Ph.D., LMSW, CSW-I, MSSA, MBA, ACE-CHC currently serves as a Clinical Social Work Intern with Serenity Counseling and Support Services. Samuel received both his Doctor of Philosophy in Advanced Studies in Human Behavior and Master of Business Administration from Capella University. Samuel completed his Master of Science in Social Administration from Case Western Reserve University.

For the past decade, Samuel has gained experience in health social work and clinical practice across a variety of settings including outpatient specialty clinics and large non-profits in North and South America, Europe, and Africa. Samuel additionally guest lectures at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in courses focused on mental health integration in medical practices and diagnostic differentials in neurodegenerative diseases. Additionally, Samuel has conducted research focused primarily on health law and policy, mental health stigma reduction, and stigmatization faced by the sexual and gender minority community in health care.

At Serenity Counseling and Support Services, Samuel works with adults, ages 18 and older in the following areas:

Samuel’s approach emphasizes the mutual development of goals for therapy and ongoing evaluation of the therapeutic approach. Under supervision, Samuel’s therapeutic interventions include Narrative Cognitive Processing Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Trauma-Informed Therapy, Crisis Intervention, and Art Therapy. While practicing, Samuel continues to seek updates and knowledge to improve his skills and provide the best possible therapeutic experience. Samuel believes in a holistic approach to mental health with the understanding that the mind has the capacity to heal itself, but therapy helps guide the way. Samuel is particularly concerned with the impact of stigma on mental health-seeking behaviors and works to improve pathways to support better access to mental health.
